Religious Moderation According to Sheikh Ahmad bin Qasim Al Ghamdi

FITK Theater Room, UIN Online News — The Faculty of Educational Sciences (FITK) at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta hosted a seminar titled “Moderation in Islam with the Exemplary Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” in the FITK Theater Room on Wednesday (17/09/2025), featuring international guest speaker Sheikh Ahmad bin Qasim Al Ghamdi, and was supported by the Center for International Cooperation Services.

In his lecture, Sheikh Ahmad explained that Islam emphasizes the principle of moderation, which means maintaining a neutral standpoint, avoiding extremes on either side, and practicing religion neither with exaggeration nor neglect.

Moderation is the hallmark of the community of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, as mentioned in the Qur’an, where Muslims are described as a just and chosen people to bear witness over mankind.

"Allah intends ease for His servants, not hardship, meaning religious practice should be carried out with balance, gentleness, and wisdom," he underlined.

Sheikh Ahmad further highlighted the importance of rejecting extremism and deviation in religion, where the dangers of groups who excommunicate fellow Muslims spark conflict and bloodshed, contrary to the Prophet’s teachings of delivering da‘wah with compassion.

"Even when engaging with the People of the Book, Islam instructs believers to do so with the best and most respectful approach. Thus, Islam becomes a strong and enduring religion among those who believe in it and follow it with kindness," he reminded.

According to Sheikh Ahmad, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has succeeded in striking a balance between adhering firmly to the Qur’an and Sunnah while also embracing knowledge, technology, and modernization. This commitment is evident in the kingdom’s stewardship of the two holy mosques, the Masjid al-Haram and the Prophet’s Mosque, and its dedication to providing the best services for pilgrims from across the globe.

In closing, Sheikh Ahmad urged young Muslims to remain steadfast in preserving their faith while also being open and tolerant toward differences. By embodying these values, he concluded, Islam will remain relevant and capable of addressing the challenges of globalization and digitalization, reaffirming religious moderation and care for humans.
