Jakarta, UIN News Online – Coinciding with his 65th birthday celebration, UIN Jakarta professor Azyuamrdi Azra launched eight of his latest books on Wednesday, 4 March 2020. The launching of the eight books was carried out in the Tsyakuran event entitled “Politik Global dengan Islam Wasathiyah: Mencegah Ekstremisme dan Terorisme” at the Indonesian National Library Building, Wednesday (03/04/2020).
Present in the event, the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Ma’ruf Amin, Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Indonesian Minister of Land Affairs and Spatial Planning Sofyan Djalil, former Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin as well as a number of colleagues and invited guests.
The eight books he launched were titled Menjaga Indonesia dari Kebangsaan hingga Masa Depan Politik Islam; Fenomena Beragama dari Dunia Arab hingga Asia Pasifik; dan Moderasi Islam di Indonesia dari Ajaran, Ibadah, hingga Perilaku. Lalu, Gerakan Pembebasan Islam; Politik Global Tanpa Islam dari Timur Tengah hingga Eropa; Relevansi Islam Wasathiyah dari Melindungi Kampus hingga Mengaktualisasi Kesalehan; and, Indonesia Bertahan dari Mendirikan Negara hingga Merayakan Demokrasi.
Meanwhile, the eight books launched today emphasize the productivity of Azyumardi Azra. Previously, a number of books he had written mostly focused on areas that became his scientific background. In addition to being published by domestic publishers, a number of his books have been published by the world’s leading network of publishers.
Some of them are entitled Jaringan Ulama Timur Tengah dan Kepulauan Nusantara Abad XVII-XVIII (1994), Pergolakan Poitik Islam (1996), Islam Reformis (1999), Konteks Berteologi di Indonesia (1999), Menuju Masyarakat Madani (1999), Pendidikan Islam: Tradisi dan Modernisasi Menuju Milenium Baru (1999), Renaisans Islam di Asia Tenggara (1999), Surau: Pendidikan Islam Tradisional dalam Transisi dan Modernisasi (2003). Then, Transformasi Politik Islam: Radikalisme, Khilafatisme, dan Demokrasi (2018).
One of the books which is very influential for academic discourse is the Jaringan Ulama Timur Tengah dan Kepulauan Nusantara Abad XVII-XVIII. This book is a published edition from his research dissertation entitled “The Transmission of Islamic Reformism to Indonesia: Networks of Middle Eastern and Malay-Indonesian Ulama in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries”, the Department of History, Columbia University, New York.
For his scientific activities and productivity, Azra was awarded a number of prestigious awards. Among them, the Most Productive Writer from Mizan Publisher (2002), Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) from the United Kingdom (2010), Sarwono Prawirohardjo Memorial Lecture (SML) from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (2017), and Order of Rising Sun: Gold and Silver Star from the Emperor of Japan (2017).
Separately, Rector of UIN Jakarta Amany Lubis congratulates and appreciates the publication of the eight books written by the UIN Jakarta professor. “Professor Azyumardi Azra is an extraordinary scholar. We are certainly very proud of his various contributions. Hopefully this can be a good example for other UIN Jakarta academicians,” said Rector. (usa/zm)
