Associate Professor Dr. Zuwati Hasim is a distinguished academic, educational leader, and thought leader at the Faculty of Education, Universiti Malaya. Her intellectual journey began with undergraduate and master’s degrees from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, before she completed her PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, with a research focus on English as a Second Language (ESL) writing assessment through a sociocultural lens.

Dr. Zuwati’s academic career is marked by strategic leadership and a strong commitment to higher education administration. She currently serves as Deputy Dean (Research & Innovation) at the Faculty of Education and as the university’s Chief Liaison Officer. Previously, she played pivotal roles in managing international programs and intercivilizational dialogue as Deputy Director at the Institute of Public Policy and International Management (INPUMA) and the Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (UMCCD) at Universiti Malaya.

As a highly productive and well-recognized researcher, Dr. Zuwati’s scholarly interests encompass language assessment, pedagogy, teacher education, media and information literacy, and school-based assessment. She has led numerous nationally and internationally funded research projects, including studies on bullying among Malaysian students (commissioned by the Ministry of Higher Education), school-based assessment evaluation, and digital resilience and cyberbullying initiatives. At the global level, she was appointed Research Coordinator by Education International (Brussels) for the Teacher-Led Learning Circles project, which focuses on formative assessment practices.

Her expertise has been recognized through multiple awards, including the 20-Year Long Service Award (2024), the Best Community Engagement Project Award (2022), and the Certificate of Excellent Service (2015) from Universiti Malaya. She is also a Microsoft Certified Innovative Educator.

Dr. Zuwati’s commitment extends beyond the university setting. She is actively involved in community engagement programs, having served as Program Director for UNESCO World Teachers’ Day celebrations (2017–2019), and as Vice President of the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG). Through her collaborations with mainstream media outlets such as The Star, Berita Harian, and RTM, she frequently shares critical perspectives on education policy, bullying issues, and curriculum reform, effectively bridging academic scholarship and public discourse.

As an editor and author, Dr. Zuwati has published high-impact books with leading publishers such as Routledge, including English Medium Instruction: Perspectives from Southeast Asian Universities. Her scholarly output also includes dozens of journal articles indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, as well as hundreds of articles, book chapters, and technical reports.

Her professional network is extensive, with memberships in organizations such as the International Literacy Association, the Applied Linguistics Association of New Zealand (ALANZ), and the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA). She has also been invited as a Visiting Professor and Visiting Scholar at several universities in Germany, Indonesia, and China.

Through a powerful combination of visionary academic leadership, high-impact research, deep community engagement, and active public communication, Associate Professor Dr. Zuwati Hasim not only shapes the future of language education and literacy in Malaysia, but also stands as an influential voice in national and global educational discourse.
