Profile

Professor Dr. Ahmad Sunawari Long is a distinguished academic and leading Islamic intellectual who has served as Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) since 2021. He holds the rank of Professor (VK7) in Islamic Philosophy and Thought. His strong academic background includes a Doctorate (PhD) from Universiti Malaya, as well as two master’s degrees (M.Phil. and M.A.) in Philosophy from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Professor Ahmad Sunawari’s research specializations encompass Contemporary Islamic Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Epistemology, and Muslim Society Studies. He is highly active in global intellectual networks, serving as President of the International Society of Muslim Philosophers and Theologians (ISOMPT) and as the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Islamic Thought (IJIT), a Scopus-indexed journal. He has also held appointments as a Visiting Professor at several universities, including Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

At the national level, his leadership and contributions are substantial. He serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of Darul Quran JAKIM and as a Member of the UKM Waqf Fund Board. In addition, he is actively involved in the Council of Deans of Islamic Studies in Malaysia and serves as a journal evaluator for MyCite and the ASEAN Citation Index (ACI).

As a researcher, Professor Ahmad Sunawari has led and participated in more than 30 research projects funded through national schemes such as FRGS, LRGS, and various government agencies. His research interests address key issues including religious moderation, Islamic psychology, urban Muslim societies, strengthening Islamic creed (ʿaqīdah), and the dynamics of Islam in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

His academic productivity is highly impressive, with numerous textbooks (including Sejarah Falsafah and Falsafah Minda), book chapters, and articles in international journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. He is also an active keynote speaker and presenter at international conferences held in countries such as Indonesia, Turkey, Taiwan, Greece, and Japan.

In the area of academic service and community engagement, Professor Ahmad Sunawari has supervised many undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, and remains actively involved in community outreach and student development initiatives. In recognition of his dedication and service, he has received several honors, including the UKM Excellent Service Award (Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang) and the honorary title Ahli Setia Negeri Sembilan (ANS).

Overall, through his combination of academic leadership, research excellence, and broad contributions to the development of Islamic thought, Professor Dr. Ahmad Sunawari Long stands as one of the most respected and influential Muslim intellectual figures in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region.
