UIN Jakarta Pioneers AI Policy in Islamic Universities

Rectorate Building, UIN Online News — UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has officially established the Artificial Intelligence and Literacy Innovation Institute (ALII) and simultaneously issued Rector's Decree No. 127/2025 concerning the Use of Artificial Intelligence. This move follows the growing enthusiasm for using artificial intelligence for academic and non-academic purposes.

“Lecturers and students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta are now experiencing a new wave of enthusiasm. The utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is no longer just a discourse, but has become an official policy,” stated Dr. Khodijah Hulliyah, Director of ALII, in her remarks.

UIN Jakarta, she noted, has issued Rector's Decree No. 127/2025, which regulates the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in both academic and non-academic activities. This policy marks a significant step within Islamic Universities in Indonesia in regulating the use of artificial intelligence.

Previously, the Faculty of Science and Technology lecturer continued, UIN Jakarta had first established the Artificial Intelligence and Literacy Innovation Institute (ALII). This institute serves as a center for AI research, innovation, and literacy training. “We want to ensure that every aspect of AI literacy and innovation proceeds according to the principles of trust and justice,” she said.

In a separate statement, UIN Jakarta Rector, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, M.A., Ph.D., conveyed the university's grand vision in responding to the digital era, “We are not merely following the current, but aiming to shape the direction of AI utilization to strengthen the spirit of modern scholarship and faith.”

Among the significant aspects related to the regulation of AI use is academic writing ethics. Students utilizing AI are required to clearly provide attribution, whether in daily assignments, theses, or scientific publications. This sets a clear boundary between using AI as a tool and the practice of plagiarism.

“We have formulated clear guidelines to ensure AI supports the learning process, not creates loopholes for cheating,” stated Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs.

The use of AI in examinations is also strictly regulated. It is only permitted if the relevant faculty establishes specific protocols, including verification mechanisms to ensure the authenticity of student competence.

In addition to students, the AI usage policy will also regulate its use among lecturers and educational staff. They will be given space to utilize AI in curriculum design, material preparation, reporting efficiency, and campus activity planning.

Nevertheless, the utilization of technology will always be accompanied by core Islamic values: honesty, justice, and intellectual integrity. “AI indeed helps us save time in research and enrich teaching materials, but the role of humanistic guidance from lecturers remains irreplaceable,” said a lecturer who preferred to remain anonymous.

Challenges and Hopes

With a strong ethical foundation, UIN Jakarta envisions widespread impact. Intensive AI literacy training will be conducted, research collaborations with leading AI developers will be expanded, and the development of digital ethics codes will continue to be refined. All of this is aimed at fostering an academic ecosystem that is technologically literate and grounded in Islamic values. “Our dream is that this policy can serve as an inspiration for other Islamic Universities across Indonesia,” hoped Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar.

Under the guidance of Islamic values, UIN Jakarta is not only a pioneer in AI adoption but also a guardian of academic integrity. It is at this juncture that technological sophistication and faith converge to shape the future of innovative and dignified higher education. (Release)
