STF UIN Jakarta Launches Philanthropy Practice Book in Indonesia

FAH, UIN News Online –Social Trust Fund (STF) UIN Jakarta has launched a book that records the experience of Muslim philanthropy practice in Indonesia titled “Towards Action: Islamic Philanthropy for Social Justice in Indonesia”. The launch was carried out at the STF UIN Jakarta and the The Master Program in Islamic History and Culture (MSKI) FAH UIN Jakarta, held at the FAH Building, Tuesday (05/31/2022).

The book, published by Trust Publishing, was written by a number of researchers led directly by the Director of STF UIN Jakarta Amelia Fauzia. The other three authors are Sri Hidayati, Endi Aulia Garadian, and Bhirawa Anoraga.

At the launch event, Amelia said, the book was written from a number of researches they had carried out since 2017 with the support of the Ford Foundation. “Research focuses on how philanthropy has developed, especially since the 2000s,” she said.

Amelia added that this book takes a direct picture of the philanthropic experience of Indonesia as a Muslim-majority country that has a long history of philanthropic practice. “This book is to discuss how far philanthropy has been practiced by the Indonesian Muslim community,” she said.

According to Amelia, in the last two decades, the practice of Islamic philanthropy with social justice perspective shows an upward trend. The need for solutions to various people's problems and regulatory support from the government provide the basis for this trend. “The practice of philanthropy is considered as a solution to achieve social justice in society,” said Amelia.

One of the authors, Bhirawa, added that this book is expected to fill the gap in the number of Indonesian Islamic philanthropic publications which are still very few, even though the Indonesian Muslim community itself has strong philanthropic roots.

Furthermore, this book is expected to encourage the optimization of Islamic philanthropy for social justice in Indonesia. “The studies carried out in a number of articles published in this book becomes the starting point in mapping out further research on the development of Indonesian philanthropy,” he said.
