Religious Affairs Minister: UIN Jakarta Must Become a Role Model in Philanthropic Development at PTKI

Main Auditorium, UIN News Online – The Indonesian Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi really appreciate the efforts of UIN Jakarta to develop the spirit of philanthropy in the campus environment. Therefore, he hopes that UIN Jakarta can also be a model for philanthropic development for all Islamic religious colleges (PTKI) in Indonesia.

This was said by the Minister in his speech at the 63rd ADIA / IAIN / UIN Jakarta Anniversary celebration with the theme "Membangun PTKI Unggul dengan Semangat Filantropi", held at the Harun Nasution Auditorium and Zoom platform, Wednesday (05/20/2020).

“I hope that the philanthropic spirit on this campus does not stop at providing assistance and short-term and consumptive donations, but can also be developed into one of the campus instruments. Furthermore, I also hope that what is done by UIN Jakarta can be a model for other Islamic religious colleges in developing a philanthropic spirit,” said the Minister.

He also said that various major universities in the world, such as Harvard University and Al-Azhar University, are supported by a high spirit of philanthropy. They have what is called an endowment fund that is used to support academic activities, such as scholarships, research, and fellowship.

“These institutions are able to develop themselves and not merely rely on financial support from the government,” he said.

Minister of Religion Fachrul Rozi said, currently Islamic higher education faces enormous challenges to be able to speak at the global level. A serious challenge facing Islamic higher education is being left behind in the fields of research, publications, and community engagement.

PTKI still has to work hard to catch up. The government continues to facilitate the world of higher education to be able to develop its best potential through various policies and funding support. However, the support provided by the government has limitations and it is not possible to meet all the research, publication and development needs of tertiary institutions.

“Therefore, I encourage Islamic universities to develop a spirit of philanthropy and an entrepreneurial spirit in their respective environments,” said Fachrul.
