Professor Azyumardi Azra is Buried at TMP Kalibata

Rectorate, UIN News Online – Professor and Rector of UIN Jakarta for the period of 1998-2006 Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra M. Phil., MA, CBE., was buried in his final resting place at the Heroes Cemetery (TMP) Kalibata Jakarta, Tuesday (09/20/2022). The funeral ceremony was led directly by the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy.

After the funeral prayer at the main auditorium of UIN Jakarta, Azyumardi Azra's body was immediately sent to his final resting place by soldiers from the Garnisun Tetap I Jakarta accompanied by national figures, colleagues, the public, family, and Academic Community of UIN Jakarta.

The funeral ceremony was also attended by a number of national figures, including the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2014-2019 period HM Jusuf Kalla, the Chairman of the DPR-RI 2004-2009 Akbar Tanjung, the Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI 2019-2024, the Chairman of the Indonesian Constitutional Court 2003-2008 Prof. Dr. Jimly Asshiddiqie, and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo. Also present in the funeral ceremony, Chairman of the Democratic Party Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, Indonesian Deputy Minister of ATR/BPN Raja Juli Antoni, and Deputy Chairman of Commission VIII DPR RI Tb Ace Hasan Syadzili.

The funeral procession itself is marked with a military gun salute as a sign of honor while the prayer was read directly by the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, Prof. Dr. KH. Nazaruddin Umar MA.

It is known, Professor Azyumardi Azra died in Malaysia, Sunday (09/18/2022), on his way to attend an international conference Besides serving as Chancellor of UIN Jakarta in the 1998-2006 period, the deceased who was trusted to be the Chairman of the Press Council for the period 2022-2025 spent most of his life teaching on campus and actively conveying his critical thoughts about Islam, National values, and humanity in various forums.
