Eid al-Adha 1446 H: Cultivating Character, Nurturing Compassion

UIN Jakarta, UIN Online NewsTakbir (Allahu Akbar) resonates from every corner. The morning air carries the scent of wet earth and the bustling sounds from mosques and bustling sacrificial animal stalls. Eid al-Adha has returned, and this year, Muslims are celebrating the 1446 H/2025 CE commemoration of Eid al-Adha. More than just a ritual of animal sacrifice, this holy day carries a spiritual message that transcends time: about the sincerity of Prophet Abraham, the steadfastness of Ishmael, and an immeasurable, total love for Allah that surpasses human logic.

Amidst the relentless digital currents, academic competition, and increasingly individualistic routines, Eid al-Adha invites all of us, especially students, to pause, reflect, and ask: have we truly understood the meaning of sacrifice? Have we made knowledge a path to giving, not just to gaining? This holy day arrives not just to be remembered, but to be truly embraced and lived. For, the essence of sacrifice is not in blood or flesh, but in the sincerity of giving and the willingness to let go for a greater good.

The Head of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta's Pusat Ma’had Al-Jami’ah (University Dormitory Center), Dr. M. Suryadinata, MA., affirmed that Eid al-Adha is an important moment to instill values of obedience, sacrifice, sincerity, solidarity, and the spirit of sharing. “Eid al-Adha conveys a message for Muslims to always maintain a good relationship with Allah, both through worship and daily behavior,” he stated.

According to him, the spirit of sharing is also crucial and must be nurtured, especially in the campus environment. “Society, including students, needs to be taught the importance of sharing with others as a form of empathy and self-control,” he added. He hopes that UIN Jakarta students will not only excel academically but also grow into individuals who care more about others and are closer to Allah SWT.

Lecturer at the Faculty of Ushuluddin, Dr. Ahmad Ridho DESA, invited students to view Eid al-Adha as a profound life lesson. “Life is not just about comfort; it's about the meaning behind every choice and struggle,” he meaningfully remarked. He emphasized that sacrifice is not merely an annual ritual but an inner training to build a strong, empathetic, and responsible character.

“You, the students, are the hope of the ummah. So, instill this within yourselves: college is not just about GPA, but also about self-worth—how much benefit you provide, how willing you are to sacrifice for the common good,” he stressed.

Furthermore, he urged that this Eid al-Adha commemoration not be merely ceremonial but also manifested in concrete actions. “Let's welcome Eid al-Adha not with empty euphoria, but with real steps: helping the sacrifice committee, greeting neighbors we rarely see, extending a hand to those in need. Show that you are not a passive generation, but a caring one,” he said.

Let us collectively make this Eid al-Adha the beginning of our spiritual, intellectual, and social awakening. Don't just be scholars who speak well, but be a generation ready to sacrifice for truth. For, great change always begins with sincere sacrifice.

Happy Eid al-Adha. May every drop of sacrificial blood cultivate excellent character within you.
