UIN Jakarta Committed to Combat Radicalism

FISIP Building, UIN News Online— UIN Jakarta committed to prevents the spread of radicalism in the name of religion to ensure the students are not influenced by radical groups and individuals. Religious radicalism is not assessed with the conditions of a pluralistic Indonesian society.

This was conveyed by the Rector, Prof.Dr. Dede Rosyada, MA, in an opening speech of the International Conference on Social and Political Sciences of UIN Jakarta, Tuesday (08/09). The conference titled “Explaining Religious Radicalism and Political Violence: Towards Nation-State Building” was attended by a number of political scientists from leading universities at home and abroad.

“UIN Jakarta’s commitment to counter terrorism which runs by radicalism movements who used religion as the motive is very strong,” he said.

 One of the initiatives, he added, is realized by cooperating with the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) for the last couple times. In this initiative, UIN Jakarta-BNPT agreed to cooperate inconducting research, advocacy, and training of anti-terrorism and de-radicalization.

“The today’s conference, which was attended by scientists, is one of the efforts of UIN Jakarta in countering terrorism that born from radicalism movements in the name of religion,” he said.

Through out the history of Muslims in Indonesia, said Rector, religious livestend to be moderate and appreciate the richness oflocal traditions. Therefore, a radical movement which does not tolerate the wealth oflocal traditions is not appropriate for the Muslim community in Indonesia. (TAM/LRF/ZM) Translated by: Mahar
