The University of Edinburgh Offers Cooperation with UIN Jakarta

Rectorate, UIN News Online – School of Divinity, The University of Edinburgh offers academic cooperation and research on Islamic studies with UIN Jakarta. The cooperation offering is delivered directly by the team of Edinburgh University. They are consisted of Outreach and Projects Manager at the School of Divinity, Mr Tom Lea, Lecturer in Muslim-Christian Relations at the School of Divinity, Dr. Joshua Ralston, the Head of Persian Studies and Senior Lecturer in Persian and Film Studies, Dr Nacim Pak-Shiraz on Monday, (2/6).

Their visit was welcomed by the Rector of UIN Jakarta Prof Dr Dede Rosyada MA and Vice Rector of Cooperation Prof Dr Murodi MA and accompanied by the Director of Post Graduate School (SPs) UIN Jakarta, the Head of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M) Prof Dr Arskal Salim GP MA, and the Head of Center for International Cooperation (PLKI) Rachmat Baihaky MA.

During his presentation, Tom Lea explained that School of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh is continued to develop the study of Islam and interreligious relationship. “The University of Edinburgh has taught the Islamic Studies, but only focused on Islam in the Middle East. By paying attention to the current dynamics, we are interested in expanding the scope to Indonesia and Southeast Asia,” he said.

In response, Rector of UIN Jakarta Prof Dr Dede Rosyada MA claimed that UIN Jakarta is ready to establish cooperation with Edinburgh University. “As the initial step, we can start with sandwich and visiting professor program,” said Dede.

On the same occasion, the Head of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LP2M) UIN Jakarta Prof Dr Arskal Salim GP MA appreciate the offer, because it allows UIN Jakarta became the center of Islamic studies Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

“Through the cooperation, we can make the research activity on Islamic Studies in Southeast Asia regions to be more interesting, not only in the Middle East,” he said.

In a separate place, the Head of Center for International Cooperation (PLKI) Rachmat Baihaky MA said that UIN Jakarta will follow up the cooperation offer. “We will soon make the MoU which will be signed by both parties,” explained Baihaky. (usa)
