Experts: Islam Upholds the Gender Equality

RSU, UIN News Online – Islam commands it’s people to paying attention to the concept of balance, harmony and wholeness, between human beings and the natural environment. The harmony and balance cannot be differentiated by gender difference.

It was conveyed by the Professor of Fiqh UIN Jakarta Prof Dr Zaitunah Subhan MA during her presentation as a guest speaker at the Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming that organized by the Center for the Study of Gender and Child (PSGA) UIN Jakarta, Friday, (2/24) at RSU UIN Jakarta. Also present in the event, FITK UIN Jakarta Lecturer Yudhi Munandi

The activity was attended at least 20 participants, also discussed the limits of rights and obligations between men and women that is mentioned in the Qur'an.

Zaitunah in her presentation explained that women are allowed to be a leader both as a fellow female leader of his people, as well as a leader of men, as long as she is able and can be trustful.

“As her skill in preaching and provide the guidance on the worship implantation, which was mentioned in QS at-Tawbah verse 71 which means The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those - Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise,” said Zaitunah.

Still according to her, Allah has given the roles, responsibilities, sanctions for mistakes, and the unequal status between men and women when conducting the religious life.

In the same place, Yudhi also revealed that gender perspective could be inserted into the syllabus of each faculty in UIN Jakarta. “Gender as  a knife to dissects all scientific assessment, that's because, gender equality needs to be understood by all academicians of UIN Jakarta, "he added. (usa)
